Special collections
Finding objects of inspiration to solve a problem I have.
I went to the special collections archive in MMU library to find and begin work on a new collection.
I will now test out the ideas I have from some of the objects found here and in other museums and over the past month. I'm aiming for a set of five locket type pieces that are directly resolved from my visits. The embroidered box at the top has given me my first idea already. This week will be spent mocking up the next four.
Keepsafe Keepsakes.
I'm preoccupied from time to time with the way in which objects are displayed. I aspire to treat objects with the value they require and deserve. But unfortunately, I forget.
I noticed this morning where I may have picked up this irritating habit, when I remembered my mums jewellery box. A selection of precious, sentimental pieces are in one box, untangled but still under appreciated. Next to it was an old shoe of one of mine or my sisters. Then a pile of junk jewellery, in a tangled mess. She has two lockets, I have one.
I'm thinking about where I would like my jewellery to end up, on the junk pile, clearly not. In the sentimental box, out of my control possibly but certainly attainable.

"In the South East Solomon Islands the local currency is strings of shell beads. To raise enough money for a marriage gift or compensation for a serious offense people have to borrow them from relatives. These depts bind them together as a community." (Top left image)
"Small decorative medallions with their scenes from classical mythology could be set as jewellery or used to decorate larger decorative pieces candleticks, clocks and boxes.
Based on famous Greek gem designs and sculpture, later examples were based on designs by well known lady ameteur artists.
Collectors had casts made as they were easier to read than the originals." (3rd and 4th images)

Made of Manchester
For the shop I made a limited edition range of pendants, using second hand fabrics and chains, remaking them into changeable textile lockets.
All lockets purchased come with an added feel good factor. Profits raised from sales returned to the charity from which the materials were purchased.
Afflecks was a bit of a hectic experience but I think we all worked really well as a team in the end and me and Amy are still raising money for charity!
The shop is now over for Made of Manchester, I will now be selling through betseyloves.com in the next few weeks.
Liverpool Design Festival '09.
Some Images of the stand I shared at Liverpool Design Festival this year. Thanks to the Design Initiative I got great exposure and experience exhibiting my work.
For the show I made a new collection of hand made textile and precious metal pieces.
Eco friendly ethos for all exhibitors. I shared my stand with Catherine Rose Quinn and beautiful knitwear tat you can see in some of the images.

A new start.
It seems that the part of my brain that hates technology/ mainly computers is clashing with the part of me that wants to become an organised human being.
This is my attempt at it. A look back over the things that have inspired me over the last few months that I haven't put down on paper. Hopefully the start of things to come.
